At least 25 people were injured and more than 200,000 were advised to evacuate in Okinawa and southwestern Japan Sunday as typhoon Vongfong brought torrential rain and strong winds to the region. Typhoon Vongfong, characterized as strong by the Japan Meteorological Agency, made landfall on Okinawa and brushed past the prefecture during the wee hours local time Sunday. It was bringing maximum sustained winds of 144 kilometers per hour (89 miles an hour), according to the agency. The typhoon was traveling slowly, about 15 kph (9.6 mph), Sunday morning, and was expected to churn toward the nation’s main islands.
