Questa notte un barcone carico di migranti è affondato a quaranta miglia da Lampedusa, a causa di una forte tempesta. Il barcone aveva chiesto aiuto con un telefono satellitare ma quando due motovedette e un elicottero lo avevano raggiunto si stava già inabissando: il mare agitato ha reso proibitivi i tentativi di mettere in salvo i migranti. Le autorità maltesi stanno coordinando i soccorsi.

Il barcone conteneva almeno duecento persone: 48 di queste sono state salvate, tra cui una donna incinta, tutti in stato di ipotermia. Altri 150 sarebbero dispersi. Diversi corpi sono stati individuati ma non sono stati ancora recuperati, sempre a causa del mare mosso. «Abbiamo sperato di vedere qualcuno che alzasse il braccio», hanno detto i soccorritori, «ma non è accaduto. Tra i cadaveri, difficili da quantificare, anche corpicini di bambini». Secondo la Guardia Costiera italiana, il barcone era lungo 13 metri ed era partito due giorni fa da Zuwarah, in Libia.
