Dear Editor:
Congratulations are in order again for “Doonesbury” creator Garry Trudeau.
He first broke new ground by becoming the first comic strip artist to win the Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning. He then moved to the world of animated filmmaking, earning an Academy Award nomination and Special Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival for “A Doonesbury Special.” Musical theater was next, as “Doonesbury” opened on Broadway, earning two Drama Desk nominations. And teaming with legendary film director Robert Altman, Trudeau wrote HBO’s Emmy-winning “Tanner ’88,” a satiric take on presidential campaigns — and a sequel, “Tanner on Tanner,” for the Sundance Channel.

This fall, Trudeau will explore the newest media frontier — original programming for streaming video — as writer and producer of “Alpha House,” an Amazon Original. Amazon Prime viewers voted for their favorites from among 14 series pilots, and “Alpha House” — a political comedy starring John Goodman as one of four Republican congressmen sharing a house in Washington — has been selected for development into a full series, airing in November.

This summer, Trudeau will take a break from “Doonesbury” in order to devote himself full-time to “Alpha House.” Beginning June 10 and continuing to Labor Day, “Doonesbury Flashbacks” will keep readers of both daily and Sunday comics entertained and ready for new adventures in the fall. Fans of Garry Trudeau have come to expect the unexpected from this creative ground-breaker. We know they’ll enjoy the ride as “Doonesbury” continues its journey.
