La regina Elisabetta II è arrivata poco dopo mezzogiorno all’aeroporto Ciampino di Roma, assieme al marito Filippo, duca di Edimburgo. La Regina, che non visitava l’Italia da 14 anni, è stata ricevuta al Quirinale dal presidente Giorgio Napolitano verso le 13, mentre alle 15.30 si è incontrata con papa Francesco in Vaticano. Per la Regina è la quarta visita a Roma (la prima fu nel 1962) e uno dei due viaggi all’estero in programma nel 2014 (l’altro sarà in Francia, in occasione del D-Day). Nonostante le necessarie misure di sicurezza adottate, la mobilitazione delle forze dell’ordine a Roma è stata molto inferiore rispetto a quella predisposta la scorsa settimana per la visita ufficiale del presidente statunitense Barack Obama.
