Si è tenuto a New York, nella chiesa di Sant’Ignazio di Loyola nell’Upper East Side, il funerale dell’attore Philip Seymour Hoffman, morto domenica a 46 anni per un’apparente overdose di eroina nel suo appartamento del Greenwich Village. Al funerale hanno partecipato molti colleghi di Hoffman, attori, registi e altri professionisti del cinema, tra i quali Cate Blanchett, Vanessa Redgrave, Justin Theroux, Meryl Streep, Joaquin Phoenix e i registi Paul Thomas Anderson, Ethan Coen, Spike Lee, tra gli altri: diversi tra loro avevano lavorato con Hoffman in uno dei suoi film. La cerimonia privata – la polizia ha tenuto pubblico e giornalisti lontani dalla chiesa – è stata celebrata in una chiesa cattolica dove in passato si sono svolti diversi funerali di personaggi celebri, tra i quali quello di Jacqueline Kennedy: è prevista una commemorazione pubblica dalla partecipazione più ampia nelle prossime settimane. Hoffman era battezzato di religione cattolica, ma non ha mai parlato del suo rapporto con la religione da adulto: la scelta del funerale cattolico ha generato qualche discussione e critica, messa a tacere dal prete che ha officiato la cerimonia e che lo conosceva da tempo.
