Spencer Platt ha 42 anni, è originario di Westport (Connecticut) ed è soprattutto uno dei più conosciuti fotografi dell’agenzia Getty Images, con cui collabora da circa 12 anni. Platt ha realizzato numerosi lavori fotografici in giro per il mondo, dall’Iraq al Libano passando per la Liberia e il Congo, ottenendo numerosi premi e riconoscimenti per le sue fotografie. Di recente ha fatto visita alle zone della costa orientale degli Stati Uniti, devastate dai forti venti e dalle piogge intense della tempesta Sandy, che ha colpito la zona nella notte tra il 29 e il 30 ottobre. Sandy ha causato decine di miliardi di dollari di danni, specialmente negli stati di New York e del New Jersey, ed è stata la causa della morte di almeno 131 persone in otto stati. Nei giorni subito dopo la tempesta, milioni di abitazioni sono rimaste senza corrente elettrica e, lungo la costa, centinaia di case hanno subito grandi danni o sono state completamente distrutte. Da allora migliaia di persone sono al lavoro per rimettere in sicurezza gli edifici, ripristinare i collegamenti stradali e rimettere insieme i pezzi delle loro vite, come mostrato efficacemente dalle foto di Platt.
