Randy Newman, illustre e ammirato cantautore americano famoso per la sua inclinazione all’ironia e alla satira sociale, ha pubblicato una nuova canzone (si può scaricare gratis) provocatoriamente intitolata “I’m dreaming of a white president” (Sogno un presidente bianco). La citazione è per “I’m dreaming of a White Christmas”, e il gioco è quello tipico di molte canzoni di Randy Newman in cui il narratore rappresenta i pregiudizi che Newman vuole prendere in giro: in questo caso l’idea che i presidenti bianchi sappiano meglio interpretare il ruolo, come dimostra la tradizione: sono sempre stati bianchi. «Ci sono teorie pseudoscientifiche vaghe prive di senso, ma di cui alcuni sono davvero convinti», ha spiegato Newman.
«Nessun’altra nazione occidentale industrializzata avrebbe eletto un presidente nero. Sono fiero che questo paese abbia eletto Obama nel 2008. Ma dall’inizio del suo mandato ho notato un eccessivo accalorarsi attorno ad argomenti che normalmente non genererebbero quel tipo di coinvolgimento: il bilancio, le nomine, l’assistenza sanitaria.» E continua: «Penso che ci siano molte persone che reputano stridente il fatto di avere un uomo nero alla Casa Bianca, e vogliono che se ne vada. Non possono credere che non esista un uomo bianco più qualificato. Non riusciresti a farlo ammettere a nessuno, e intendo proprio nessuno.»
