La violenza del terremoto di magnitudo 8,8 e le onde anomale lungo la costa nord-orientale del Giappone hanno devastato ampie porzioni di territorio, causando la morte di centinaia di persone. Le stime sul numero delle vittime continuano ad aumentare, ora si parla di 1.700 morti anche se le autorità danno stime più basse e caute, mentre il livello di distruzione e le conseguenze dello tsunami sono evidenti.
